José Hernández Municipal Museum

On March 11th 1960, a group of distinguished personalities proceeded to found an institution destined to maintain and spread out the argentine values, with elements provided by the Culture National Direction (Dirección de Cultura de la Nación), the José Hernández Museum from Buenos Aires city and individual donors.
Today it functions in the old Laguna de los Padres Ranch (Estancia Laguna de los Padres) on the coast of the homonym lagoon, founded by Mr. Ladislao Martínez Castro, along with his brother. As their guest, José Hernández, together with his father, arrived at the ranch in 1848. There, he knew the gaucho’s way of life and the environment where his existence was developed; surely, the experiences and memories of this period of life that he would preserve inspired him to create Martin Fierro, masterpiece of vernacular literature.
From the current collection, we must distinguish daggers and larger knives of different types, General San Martin’s and other patriots’ manuscripts and, among works of art: Castagnino and Monticelli’s paintings and Chacho Waks’ sculptures. The Regional Historic Sector offers a panorama about the evolution in our region since 10.000 B.C. until today.
Last century’s carriages can be seen below one of the building’s eaves, distinguishing, among them, the one that was passenger’s transport and the one used by one of the first doctors of the region, Dr. Juan H. Jara, to visit his patients. There is also a José Hernández monument constructed in the museum park, product of Luis Monticelli’s inspiration, a sculptor from Mar del Plata.

Likewise, you can find Martin Fierro’s issues of different English and Spanish editions.
